Our mission is to empower black woman by first, giving the woman in the poorest areas a home of their own (paid in full with no loan). Black woman are the hardest hit when it comes to job pay, generational wealth and even position in their communities. Yet, we believe they are the most deserving and can be the biggest stabilizing force. We all come from the womb of a woman, and they are often the main person who raises us. it's only right that we guarantee all woman the stability of a home of their own. In a way, this can also be looked at a little like an inheritance or some generational wealth which the black community had very little. We believe woman are the basis of a sound society and by empowering them we improve our society. Woman with a home gain more self-esteem, independence and the ability to positively affect their children and partners.
With the stability of owning their own home they have a permanent place to live in the with no rent or mortgage payments. This gives them a home base with stability and also the status of being a home owner. It also can allow them to be fully financially independent even without a job if they are willing to rent out a couple of the bedrooms at say $300 to $400 each. Admittedly, this would be a meager income but with conservative habits it is sufficient, and one could pay their property taxes, insurances and food (along with a mobile phone and internet connection) and still have a little money left over, possibly even save $100 a month or more.
We have seen first hand what a great and welcomed gift a home can be. Our first woman to receive the gift of a home was Shenteria's mother. Like many black woman she had been in the home raising her children most of her life and hardly had any social security. So at 66 she had to live with her younger sister and watch her kids even though she was at the age or retirement and well deserving of it. I remember having received some generational wealth from my parents at 65 years old and how helpful that was to me. With that gratitude I talked with Shenteria and told her I would pay half on a home for her mom. She was excited and said she'd pay half too. So we bought her a home (you can see the video of Shenteria gifting the home to her mother and her surprise.
This has been a great gift for Shenteria's mother but it has also been a great gift for Shenteria and me. Happiness studies show that there actually isn't any measurable increase in happiness beyond an income of about $75,000 a year. So making more and more money beyond that really isn't going to increase your happiness. However, Happiness studies show that there is considerably increase in happiness when we give. So what we propose at Empoweramillionblackwoman.com is that anyone making over $75,000 a year, and in particular anyone with over a million in net assets, should consider gifting a home to a black woman in need. We have started this project in one of the poorer areas of a city with lower priced houses. An older 3 + bedroom home can be bought for around $30,000 to $40,000. So this would only be about 3% or 4% of your net worth (which wouldn't really change your style of living), but it would completely change another person's life. This would truly be paying some of your good fortune forward and really making a difference in the world. We promise you'll find it to be one of the most gratifying thing you have ever done. And it's the gift that keeps on giving. There's hardly a day that goes by that we don't rejoice that Shenteria's mom now has her own home.
We also encourage the recipient's of the home to send a short report of how they're doing at least once or twice a year. This is their way of saying thanks and it is a reminder of what a difference you have made in a person's life.
